Het gloednieuw erfgoeddepot ‘Depot Rato’, dat officieel opengaat op 7 september, krijgt vandaag een nieuw beeldhouwwerk. Het Franse kunstenaarsduo ‘mountaincutters’ heeft het werk ‘Invisible alliances, under the skin of reality’ gemaakt, speciaal ontworpen voor het depot. Het werk vormt een passend eerbetoon aan de tientallen medewerkers en vrijwilligers die Depot Rato mee mogelijk maken.
“Depot Rato wordt een gloednieuwe, moderne plaats in Mechelen om onze historische collecties onder te brengen. In 2016 kocht de stad twee oude industriële loodsen aan van de voormalige Société Rateau, aan de Leuvensesteenweg in Muizen. De voorbije jaren werd het gebouw volledig verbouwd tot een duurzaam en hoogwaardig depot, waar de vijf Mechelse erfgoedpartners (Museum Hof van Busleyden, Stadsarchief Mechelen, Bibliotheek Het Predikheren, Projecten & Monumenten en Erfgoedcel Mechelen) hun uitgebreide collecties zullen bewaren. De officiële opening van het depot staat gepland op 7 september, maar vandaag mogen we al het prachtig beeldhouwwerk van mountaincutters onthullen, een terechte hulde aan alle medewerkers die de voorbije jaren de werking van Depot Rato gerealiseerd hebben”, zegt burgemeester Bart Somers.
“Het kunstwerk van mountaincutters bestaat uit zeven paar bronzen handen, vastgemaakt aan de buitenmuur. We kozen heel bewust voor een kunstwerk buiten, zodat iedereen het op elk moment kan bekijken. Depot Rato is immers een plek van, voor én over de Mechelaar. Door de handen op ooghoogte te hangen, vergroten we de betrokkenheid: de afstand tussen toeschouwer en sculptuur verkleint. Tegelijk creëert mountaincutters met Invisible alliances, under the skin of reality een tactiele ervaring. Mensen kunnen en mogen de bronzen handen die uit de muur lijken te komen, aanraken. Dat maakt het eerbetoon aan de helpende handen van medewerkers en vrijwilligers nog mooier”, aldus schepen van Cultuur Björn Siffer.
We hebben er lang aan gewerkt, maar volgende week gaat het officieel open, het nieuwe Depot Rato. Het is een moderne opslagplaats geworden om het historisch erfgoed van de stad vakkundig op te slaan voor toekomstige generaties. Duurzaamheid staat voorop, dankzij innovatieve bouwmaterialen. Op zondag 8 september zwaait Depot Rato dan voor het eerst de deuren open tijdens Open Monumentendag en kan het grote publiek het nieuwe erfgoeddepot bezoeken. Erfgoeddepot zkt. kunstwerk
Om de nieuwe thuishaven van het Mechelse erfgoed te eren met een passend kunstwerk, stelde Kunsthal Mechelen curator Evelyn Simons aan om op zoek te gaan naar geschikte kunstenaars. Vier kunstenaars werden geselecteerd en kregen de opdracht om een voorontwerp in te dienen.
Het kunstwerk van mountaincutters bestaat uit zeven paar bronzen handen. Via de opvallende giet- en ontluchtingskanalen, die na het gieten niet verwijderd werden maar als deel van het kunstwerk behouden bleven, zijn de handen verbonden met kleine plaatjes die op hun beurt vastgeschroefd zijn aan de muur.
De kunstenaars vertellen hoe hun kunstwerk tot stand kwam: “Tijdens ons eerste bezoek aan Depot Rato waren we onder de indruk van de zorg waarmee elk stukje geschiedenis hier een plek krijgt. We observeerden de medewerkers en vrijwilligers en konden blijven kijken naar hun bewegingen. Vooral hun handen sprongen daarbij in het oog. Als een menselijke ketting dienen ze één gemeenschappelijk doel: het Mechelse erfgoed bewaren. Invisible alliances, under the skin of reality vertelt het conservatieproces als een opeenvolging van handposities.”
Mountaincutters is een opkomende naam binnen de wereld van de beeldende kunsten. Het kunstwerk aan de buitenmuur van Depot Rato is het eerste werk dat ze plaatsen in de publieke ruimte. De handen zijn gemaakt van brons, waardoor het kunstwerk uitstekend bestand is tegen alle weersomstandigheden.Om de zichtbaarheid te vergroten, zijn de bronzen handen afgewerkt met een blauwe patine.
“Mechelen is een stad rijk aan geschiedenis, en daar horen vele historische objecten en rekwisieten bij. Het depot bewaart al deze archeologische vondsten, de duizenden kunstwerken, historische voorwerpen en boeken op de juiste temperaturen, om deze duurzaam te bewaren voor volgende generaties. Depot Rato bewaart het DNA van onze stad. Het is de onderbouw van ons kunsthistorisch verleden en een stad als Mechelen is het aan zijn status verplicht om al die artefacten in de best mogelijke omstandigheden te bewaren en te ontsluiten”, besluit schepen van cultuur Björn Siffer.
Over mountaincutters
Na hun studies in Marseille, wonen en werken mountaincutters (1990) in Brussel. Hun multidisciplinaire praktijk combineert installatie en beeldhouwkunst, maar ook tekenen, schilderen en fotografie. Centraal in hun praktijk staat de verhouding van lichamen en hun omgeving centraal. Hun staalconstructies, glaselementen, keramiek, stoffen en organische materialen vormen nieuwe ecosystemen, waarin energie wordt gekanaliseerd tussen het menselijke, het organische en het levenloze. Vorig jaar kregen mountaincutters een grote solotentoonstelling in het gereputeerde Palais de Tokyo in Parijs. Het kunstwerk aan Depot Rato is de eerste opdracht van het kunstenaarsduo in openbare ruimte en ook voor hen een mijlpaal.
